Chinese Lion Dance

The Chinese Lion Dance has a history of more than a thousand years.

Historically, in Southern China, the Lion Dance (accompanied by loud noises of the drums, cymbals and gong)  is believed to chase away evil spirits and bring good fortune to the people. While in Northen China, the Lion Dance acts more as an entertainment for the Emporer and his people.

Today, still culturally significant for the Chinese people, Chinese Lion Dance has more of a symbolical value. Every Chinese New Year, lion dance troupes throughout the world perform on the streets, in shops, schools, restaurants etc to bring excitement and livelihood to the people.

The University of Bristol Chinese Lion Dance Troupe

The University of Bristol Chinese Lion Dance Troupe was founded in 1995 by a Malaysian Economics student, Choon Kit Poo, and had since acted as an informal, autonomous sub-group of the University of Bristol Chinese Society. The troupe's main aim is to promote Chinese Culture (in the form of lion dancing) to students of Univeristy of Bristol and the local community.

We have been invited to perform for different societies, schools, restaurants, charities and shops for various events. We were even invited to perform in different universities, from as near as the University of West of England (UWE) and Bath, to as far as Oxford and Warwick!
